How to pass a prop firm challenge without breaking a rule
A practical guide to the limits, with sizing tables – no promises, just fewer accidental breaches.
Short answer
To pass a prop firm challenge you have to reach the profit target without ever touching the daily loss or the maximum loss limit, and a single breach ends the attempt while the target can wait – none of the current plans of FTMO, HyroTrader or Breakout reviewed here has a time limit. So work backwards from the limits: learn exactly how your firm measures them, size every trade so a losing streak still fits inside the daily limit, stop for the day well before it and check the room left before each trade. No method guarantees a pass; this guide is about not breaking a rule by accident.
1. Write the rules down in your firm’s own terms
For every limit note four things: the percentage, what it is a percentage of (initial balance or today’s balance), what is checked against it (balance or equity with open positions) and when the day resets. The three firms reviewed on 22 October 2026 answer differently:
- FTMO: balance at midnight CE(S)T minus a share of the initial capital, checked against equity – see FTMO rules.
- HyroTrader: equity at 00:00 UTC minus a share of the initial balance – see HyroTrader rules.
- Breakout: 3% of the balance at 00:30 UTC – see Breakout rules.
Then write the same limits in money for your account size. “Equity must stay above $97,000 until midnight” is easier to respect than “5%”.
2. Size from the daily limit, not from the target
The question is how many full losses in a row you can take before the day is over. The table counts them for common daily and maximum limits and risk per trade:
Full losses in a row that still fit
| Limit | 0.25% risk | 0.5% risk | 1% risk | 2% risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3% | 11 | 5 | 2 | 1 |
| 4% | 15 | 7 | 3 | 1 |
| 5% | 19 | 9 | 4 | 2 |
| 6% | 23 | 11 | 5 | 2 |
| 10% | 39 | 19 | 9 | 4 |
Full 1R losses in a row after which you are still strictly above the limit, before fees and slippage: (limit ÷ risk) rounded up, minus 1. Fees and slippage can cost one more loss.
What the table means for size and time
At 2% risk a 3% daily limit survives one loss; at 0.5% it survives five. The position size calculator turns the risk into a size including fees.
How long the target takes follows from your expectancy. Illustration, not a forecast: with a 10% target, 0.5% risk per trade and an expectancy of +0.3 R, the average trade adds 0.15%, so you need about 67 trades on average; at 1% risk about 34. Real results swing around that average, so judge your expectancy on enough trades first – the expectancy calculator shows the formula.
3. Set your own stop above the firm’s limit
Decide a personal daily stop well inside the firm’s limit, for example a maximum number of trades and a maximum loss for the day. In Edgetrail both go into the trade plan of the morning analysis, and the prop firm mode warns at 75% of the daily limit – a sensible point to stop, not to look for the next trade.
4. Check the room before every trade
- Room left today must be larger than this trade’s risk plus a buffer for any open position.
- Room to the maximum loss must survive the losing streak from the table.
- Trailing limit? A winning day raises the floor; a profit you give back now counts against you.
- Your state: the pre-trade checklist asks about sleep, calm, a clear plan and revenge mode before the first trade.
5. Mind the clock
Positions open over the reset carry their floating loss into the new day at firms that measure equity. FTMO resets at midnight CE(S)T, HyroTrader at 00:00 UTC and Breakout at 00:30 UTC. Edgetrail’s days end at your device’s local midnight, so in another time zone treat its daily number as an estimate around the reset.
6. Know the rules that are not about loss
- Minimum trading days: FTMO counts days on which you open a position; HyroTrader counts days on which you close a trade of at least 5% of the initial balance that moved at least 1%.
- Consistency: FTMO’s 1-Step best day may be at most 50% of total profit (Instant: 30%); HyroTrader caps one day at 40% of the target on One- and Two-Step.
- Prohibited practices: martingale, hedging across accounts, low-cap exposure and news rules differ by firm – read your agreement.
7. Review the challenge every week
A weekly review shows whether the losses come from the setup or from rule breaks, and which days and hours cost you. Keep one written trading plan for the whole challenge and do not switch setups mid-way.
Tracking it in Edgetrail
The prop firm mode puts account size, daily loss, static or trailing drawdown, target and minimum days next to your realised trades and warns at 75% and 100%. It does not see open positions or the firm’s day boundary, which is why steps 4 and 5 stay your job. For other journals with prop features, see trading journals for prop firms. Before you pick a risk per trade, the risk of ruin calculator shows how often a losing streak of your system reaches a drawdown limit, and the glossary defines daily loss limit, trailing drawdown and the other rule terms. Edgetrail costs $24 a month or $199 a year; the first 50 Founders pay $99 once, after that a Lifetime plan costs $249 once. The first 14 days are free without a credit card, and every payment comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common way to fail a prop firm challenge?
We have no data on why traders fail. What the rules make clear is that one breach of the daily or maximum loss ends the challenge, while the target has no deadline on the plans reviewed here – so protecting the limits comes first.
How much should I risk per trade in a challenge?
That is your decision, not advice from us. The table shows the trade-off: at 1% risk a 5% daily limit leaves room for four full losses in a row, at 0.5% for nine, before fees.
Do open positions count against the daily loss?
At FTMO, HyroTrader and Breakout the limits are checked against equity or include open positions, so yes. Edgetrail only counts closed trades, so keep a buffer for anything still open.
Is there a time limit to pass?
Not on the plans checked on 22 October 2026: FTMO’s rules list none, HyroTrader’s trading period is unlimited and Breakout states no minimum or maximum time.
