FTMO rules and how to track them in Edgetrail

Daily loss, maximum loss, targets and trading days per account type – checked on FTMO’s page on 22 October 2026.

Short answer

FTMO’s 2-Step Challenge allows a maximum daily loss of 5% and a maximum loss of 10% of the initial capital, the 1-Step Challenge 3% and 10%; the 2-Step loss limit is static, the 1-Step one trails the highest balance at midnight. The profit target is 10% (2-Step Verification 5%), and only the 2-Step phases need at least 4 trading days. In Edgetrail’s prop firm mode you enter exactly these numbers – the settings per plan are below, checked on FTMO’s Trading Objectives page on 22 October 2026.

How FTMO measures the daily loss

FTMO recalculates the limit every day at 00:00 CE(S)T: the balance at that moment minus the daily percentage of the initial capital (on day one the initial capital itself). During the day your equity – balance plus open profit and loss, swaps and commissions – must not fall below it.

Example, $100,000 2-Step: the balance at midnight is $102,000, the limit is $5,000, so equity has to stay above $97,000 until the next midnight. On the 1-Step the limit is $3,000 and the floor $99,000.

How the maximum loss works

  • 2-Step (static): equity must never fall below 90% of the initial capital – $90,000 on a $100,000 account, no matter how high the account has been.
  • 1-Step (trailing at the end of the day): the floor is 10% below the highest midnight balance (or the initial capital, if higher) and can only rise. A midnight balance of $104,000 lifts it to $94,000. It resets to 90% of the initial capital when a reward is withdrawn and a new account is issued.
  • Instant (trailing during the day): the floor moves up when a trade closes at a new balance high and does not reset after a reward.

The profit target counts only with all positions closed.

For the FTMO Account after passing, keep the same loss limits and set Profit target and Minimum trading days to 0.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings (gear icon) and, under Features, switch on Prop firm challenge. The challenge start is set to today.
  2. Fill in Name (optional), Account size, Max daily loss, Max drawdown, Drawdown type (Static or Trailing), Profit target and Minimum trading days from the table above.
  3. Set Challenge start to the first day of the phase, so earlier trades do not count.
  4. Enter 0 to switch a rule off. An empty field falls back to the default (5% daily, 10% drawdown, 10% target, 4 days).
  5. The dashboard now shows the profit target, what is left for today, the drawdown buffer and the trading days. After each save, Edgetrail warns once per level and day at 75% and at 100% of the daily limit and of the drawdown buffer.

Where Edgetrail and FTMO count differently

Edgetrail’s daily limit is the same 5% or 3% of the account size, applied to the sum of the day’s realised results – the same number as FTMO’s as long as no position stays open over midnight. In 1-Step trailing mode Edgetrail moves the floor after each closed trade, not only at midnight, so during the day it is stricter than FTMO; once your highest balance passes $110,000 (on $100,000) it is looser, because it stops at the starting balance. The drawdown calculator lets you check the floor with your own highest midnight balance.

Other firms and tools

Firms often mean different things by the same words, so read the rules of the firm you actually trade with. Also written up with dated sources: HyroTrader rules (Zero-, One- and Two-Step, with equity measured at 00:00 UTC) and Breakout rules (Classic, Pro, Turbo and Spark, with a daily limit that moves with the balance). How static, intraday-trailing and end-of-day-trailing floors move is worked through day by day in trailing vs static drawdown; where your floor sits today shows the drawdown calculator, and how likely a losing streak reaches it at your risk per trade shows the risk of ruin calculator. What Edgetrail does not check

  • Open positions. Edgetrail counts only realised results of closed trades, after fees, including partial exits on the day they happen. The firm counts open profit and loss as well.
  • The firm’s day boundary. A day in Edgetrail ends at midnight in your device’s local time.
  • One account by name. Every trade in the account currency since the challenge start counts. If you trade a second account in the same currency during the same period, it counts too.
  • FTMO’s trading days. FTMO counts a day (CE(S)T) on which you open a position; Edgetrail counts days with a closed trade or partial exit.
  • The Best Day rule. On the 1-Step (orders from 12 October 2026) the best day may be at most 50% of total profit, on the Instant account 30%. Edgetrail does not compute it; FTMO says exceeding it is not a breach, you keep trading until the ratio fits.
  • The 1-Step trailing above 110%. FTMO keeps raising the limit with every higher midnight balance; Edgetrail’s trailing floor stops at the starting balance.
  • Sync with the firm. There is no sync with prop firm platforms; trades come in via CSV import, by hand or through the exchange imports.

Frequently asked questions

Is FTMO’s maximum loss static or trailing?

It depends on the account type: static at 90% of the initial capital on the 2-Step, trailing the highest midnight balance on the 1-Step, and trailing each new closed balance high on the Instant account.

How much can I lose per day on a $100,000 FTMO account?

$5,000 on the 2-Step and $3,000 on the 1-Step and Instant account, measured from the balance at midnight CE(S)T against your equity including open positions.

How many trading days does FTMO require?

At least 4 trading days in each 2-Step phase. A trading day is a CE(S)T day on which you open at least one position. The 1-Step and Instant accounts have no minimum.

Does Edgetrail import my FTMO trades automatically?

No. There is no sync with FTMO; bring the trades in via CSV import or enter them by hand, then the prop firm mode checks them against the rules you set.
