Prop firm rules compared, and how to track them

Daily loss, max loss and targets of three firms – from their own rule pages, checked on 22 October 2026.

Short answer

FTMO, HyroTrader and Breakout all end a challenge on two loss limits – a daily one and a total one – but they measure them differently: FTMO resets the daily limit at midnight Central European time, HyroTrader at 00:00 UTC from your equity, and Breakout at 00:30 UTC as 3% of your balance at that moment. The table lists each plan’s numbers from the firms’ own pages, checked on 22 October 2026, and each firm page shows which values to enter in Edgetrail’s prop firm mode and what Edgetrail cannot see.

Three ways to measure a daily loss

Take a $100,000 account that starts the day at $104,000:

  • FTMO 2-Step: the limit is the balance at midnight CE(S)T minus 5% of the initial capital – equity must stay above $99,000.
  • HyroTrader One-Step: equity at 00:00 UTC minus 4% of the initial balance – the floor is $100,000.
  • Breakout 1-Step: 3% of the balance at 00:30 UTC, so $3,120 – the floor is $100,880. Below the starting balance the Breakout limit shrinks with the balance.

All three count open positions. A journal that sums the day’s closed trades sees the same limit only when no position is open across the reset.

Static, trailing and end-of-day trailing

A static limit never moves: start minus X%. A trailing limit follows the highest balance. FTMO’s 1-Step trails the highest balance at midnight, FTMO’s Instant account trails each new closed high during the day, and Breakout’s Spark trails the closed balance once a day and keeps trailing for the life of the account. Edgetrail’s trailing mode follows the highest realised balance after every closed trade and stops at the starting balance – exact for static plans, close for trailing ones until the high passes start plus the drawdown. The free drawdown calculator shows the room to either kind of floor.

Firm by firm

Tracking the rules in Edgetrail

The prop firm mode holds one set of rules at a time: account size, maximum daily loss, maximum drawdown (static or trailing), profit target, minimum trading days and the challenge start. It works on realised results and warns at 75% and 100% of each limit. For a choice of journals for challenges, see trading journals for prop firms. Edgetrail costs $24 a month or $199 a year; the first 50 Founders pay $99 once, after that a Lifetime plan costs $249 once. The first 14 days are free without a credit card, and every payment comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Which prop firm has the strictest daily loss limit?

Among the plans checked on 22 October 2026, FTMO 1-Step, FTMO Instant, HyroTrader Zero-Step and all Breakout 1-Step plans allow 3% a day. Breakout’s 3% is taken from the balance at 00:30 UTC, so it is smaller when the account is below its start.

Do prop firms count open positions in the daily loss?

Yes. FTMO checks equity including open profit and loss, swaps and commissions; HyroTrader measures equity including floating profit and loss; Breakout enforces its Spark trailing limit against equity. Plan a buffer for open trades.

Is a trailing drawdown worse than a static one?

A trailing limit moves up with your best balance, so profits you give back count against it. A static limit stays at start minus X%. Which one is harder depends on how your equity moves, not on the number alone.

Can Edgetrail track two challenges at once?

No. The prop firm mode holds one set of rules, counted for the account currency from the challenge start. Set the start date to the current phase.
