The best trading journals for prop firm challenges (2026)

Daily loss, trailing drawdown, several accounts – what to check before you choose.

Short answer

For a prop firm challenge, a journal has to do more than log trades: it should show how much room is left today and to the drawdown limit, handle static and trailing drawdown, keep accounts apart and bring trades in from your platform. Edgetrail’s prop firm mode tracks daily loss, static or trailing drawdown, profit target and minimum trading days against your closed trades and warns at 75% and 100%, but it has no MT4, MT5 or Tradovate sync – those trades come in via CSV. TradeZella states sync with more than 500 brokers and prop firms.

What to check

  • Daily loss tracking in percent of the starting balance, with a warning before the limit.
  • Drawdown type: static (never below start minus X%) or trailing (follows the high-water mark – at most up to the starting balance at many futures prop firms). Check your firm’s exact rule; our drawdown calculator shows both.
  • Open positions: prop firms usually count them; most journals use closed trades only.
  • Several accounts kept apart, so one challenge does not mix with another.
  • Getting trades in: direct sync with your platform, or a CSV export.

How Edgetrail calculates

The basis is the realised result of closed trades since the start of the challenge, in the current account. Open positions do not count – the dashboard says so, because the prop firm does count them. The daily loss is the sum of the day by closing date. Trailing drawdown follows the high-water mark and stops at the starting balance. Details: prop firm tracker. Edgetrail costs $24 a month or $199 a year; the first 50 Founders pay $99 once, after that a Lifetime plan costs $249 once. The first 14 days are free without a credit card, and every payment comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Where Edgetrail is weaker

  • No direct sync with MT4, MT5, Tradovate or Rithmic – use their CSV export.
  • Open positions are not part of the numbers.
  • Replay covers crypto only, so futures setups cannot be replayed.

Firm rules

Write down your firm’s exact rules first: FTMO, HyroTrader and Breakout are written up with dated sources; the prop firm rules overview explains static and trailing limits.
