How far back crypto 1-minute candles go on Bybit, Binance, OKX and Coinbase

Measured, not copied: the first 1-minute candle per exchange, market type and coin – with the data as CSV and JSON.

Short answer

Edgetrail measured on 4 November 2026 how far back 1-minute candles go: to 20 July 2015 on Coinbase (BTC-USD), 17 August 2017 on Binance (BTCUSDT spot), 11 January 2018 on OKX (BTC-USDT spot) and 14 November 2018 on Bybit (BTCUSD inverse). Perpetuals start later: Binance USDⓈ-M on 8 September 2019, OKX swaps on 1 October 2019, Bybit USDT perpetuals on 25 March 2020. Every other market begins on the day the exchange listed it – for 29 of the top 50 coins that is in 2021 or later.

This website shows two market counts: on 4 November 2026, 16:18 UTC Edgetrail counted 4,952 crypto markets – the figure used for replay everywhere – and 5,935 markets in total, because Bybit, Binance and OKX also list 983 stock, ETF, commodity and FX contracts.

Measured on 4 November 2026, 16:18 UTC via the exchanges’ public APIs. Markets = every trading market of that type, as Edgetrail’s replay loads them. The first candle is the minimum over the measured markets (top 50 by turnover, all inverse and COIN-M perpetuals, all OKX USD swaps, every BTC and ETH market).

Rank by 24-hour turnover in US dollars across all nine market types together (without stablecoins, fiat and stock/commodity contracts), measured on 4 November 2026, 16:18 UTC. Per exchange the earliest 1-minute candle across the USDT perpetual, the USDT spot market (Coinbase: USD) and, where listed, inverse/COIN-M. “–” = no trading market for that coin. Every market type separately is in the CSV file.

What the data shows

  • 21 of the top 50 coins have 1-minute history from before 2021 on at least one exchange; for the median coin the longest history starts in 2023.
  • Who has the longest history per coin: Binance 15, Bybit 6, OKX 6, Coinbase 6 of the top 50 have their earliest 1-minute candle there; for 17 coins two or more exchanges start on the same day.
  • Spot usually comes first – but barely. On Binance the spot market is older than the USDⓈ-M perpetual for 29 of 38 top coins listed on both; the median head start is 1 day, because most new coins now launch on spot and futures within days of each other.
  • Most derivatives are new. Of 1,492 crypto perpetuals and futures on Bybit, Binance USDⓈ-M and OKX with a listing date, 49% were listed in 2025 or 2026 (listing dates from the exchanges’ instrument data).

Download the data

Download CSV (top 50, all nine market types separately) · Download JSON (everything including market counts, BTC and ETH detail). CSV columns: linear, spot and inverse = Bybit, bn_ = Binance, okx_ = OKX, cb_ = Coinbase; an empty cell means there was no trading market or no candle. Times are UTC. How it was measured

  1. Markets. The same public endpoints the Edgetrail app uses list every trading market: Bybit /v5/market/instruments-info, Binance exchangeInfo (spot, USDⓈ-M, COIN-M), OKX /api/v5/public/instruments, Coinbase Exchange /products. Only markets with status “trading” count.
  2. Relevance. 24-hour turnover from each exchange’s ticker endpoint, converted to US dollars and added up per coin across all nine market types. Stablecoins, fiat and stock, ETF, commodity and FX contracts are left out of the ranking.
  3. First 1-minute candle. Binance returns it directly (klines with startTime=0). On Bybit and OKX the search narrows from monthly to daily to 1-minute candles and then checks that no older 1-minute candle exists; if one does, a binary search on the time finds it. Coinbase has no “from the beginning” query, so daily candles are scanned back to December 2014, then hourly and 1-minute candles forward.
  4. Pace. One request at a time per exchange (80–160 ms apart), up to five retries – 2,980 requests in total for this snapshot.

Known gaps and limits

  • Not every market is searched. The first candle per market type is the minimum over the measured markets. A Bitcoin market is the oldest one in every market type we measured, so the table is very unlikely to change if all 5,935 markets were searched – but it is not proven.
  • Delisted markets are missing. Only markets trading on the day of measurement count; an exchange’s older, delisted contracts may have earlier data.
  • Gaps are not counted. Coinbase returns no candle for a minute without trades, and every exchange has maintenance pauses. “First candle” says where the history starts, not that it is complete.
  • OKX quirk. For several older OKX markets the daily candles start on 1 January 2020, while 1-minute candles go further back (BTC-USDT-SWAP to 16 December 2019). The search therefore always checks the 1-minute data itself.
  • Not only crypto any more. 983 of the 5,935 markets are stock, ETF, commodity or FX contracts (Bybit 313, Binance 236, OKX 434). They count as markets, but not in the coin ranking.

What this means for a backtest

A 1-minute history of five years is about 2.6 million candles – enough for hundreds of setups even on a slow strategy. A coin listed in 2025 gives you a year at most, and only in one market regime. If you test on a young coin, test the same rules on BTC or ETH as well, and read how to backtest a crypto strategy for the sample sizes that make a result meaningful. Edgetrail’s bar replay loads candles from the same endpoints measured here, so these dates are what replay can show; the exchange pages for Bybit, Binance, OKX and Coinbase list the market types, and Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana have their own pages. For a first study on top of this history, see how often Bitcoin takes the previous day’s high or low.
