How often Bitcoin takes the previous day’s high or low
Every completed UTC day of BTCUSDT on Binance since 2017, compared with the day before – with ETH and SOL, by year and by weekday, as CSV and JSON.
Short answer
Edgetrail checked every completed UTC day of BTCUSDT on Binance spot from 18 August 2017 to 3 November 2026 – 3,365 days – against the day before: Bitcoin traded above the previous day’s high on 47% of days and below the previous day’s low on 42.6%; 10.5% took both and 20.9% took neither. Taking a level was not the same as holding it: on the days BTC took the previous high, it closed back inside the previous day’s range 42.9% of the time (a sweep) and closed above the high 51.2% of the time. Evaluated on 4 November 2026, 16:55 UTC.
Across BTCUSDT, ETHUSDT and SOLUSDT, 46% to 47% of days took the previous high and 18.1% to 20.9% were inside days. The weekday matters more than the coin: Saturday was an inside day for BTC 45.7% of the time, Monday only 8.5%.

All completed UTC days, evaluated on 4 November 2026, 16:55 UTC. Shares are percent of all days, except the sweeps. ¹ Sweep = level taken and the daily close (end of the UTC day) back inside the previous day’s range, as a share of the days that took that level.
What the numbers show
- A break is the normal case. On 79.1% of UTC days Bitcoin traded beyond at least one side of the previous day’s range. A previous-day high or low being taken is an everyday event, not a signal on its own.
- Many breaks did not hold. Of the days that took the previous high, 51.2% closed above it, 42.9% closed back inside the previous range and the rest closed below the previous low. For the low: 45.3% closed below it, 47.5% closed back inside.
- The weekday shapes the result. Monday took the previous (Sunday) high most often, 59.3% of the time, and Saturday stayed inside Friday’s range most often. That fits quieter weekend trading, but this study does not measure range size, so treat it as a pattern to check, not a rule.
- Years differ less than weekdays. Across the complete years 2018–2025, the share of days that took the previous high moved between 41.6% (2018) and 51.2% (2021).

How it was measured
- Data. Daily candles (klines, interval 1d) of BTCUSDT, ETHUSDT and SOLUSDT on Binance spot, each from its first candle (BTC and ETH 17 August 2017, SOL 11 August 2020), fetched from the public endpoint
/api/v3/klinesvia data-api.binance.vision, Binance’s market-data mirror – 11 requests, one at a time. - Day boundaries. A day is a UTC day from 00:00 to 24:00 UTC, exactly as Binance cuts its daily candle. The first day of each market serves only as the reference for the second; the current, unfinished UTC day is left out, so the last day counted is 3 November 2026. No calendar day was missing in any of the three markets.
- Taking a level. The previous day’s high counts as taken when the day’s high is strictly above it – a wick of a single tick is enough, and the close plays no part. An exactly equal high does not count. The previous day’s low works the same way in reverse.
- Close and sweep. The close is the last price of the UTC day. A sweep of the high means the day took the previous high and closed between the previous low and the previous high (both included); a sweep of the low is the mirror image. A day that took both sides and closed inside counts as a sweep of both.
- Shares. Percent of all counted days, rounded to one decimal; sweeps, and closes beyond the level in the text, are given as a share of the days that took that level. The raw counts are in the JSON file.
Limits
These numbers describe Binance spot only. Another exchange or a perpetual prints slightly different highs and lows, and because a single tick decides whether a level counts as taken, its percentages will differ a little. A different day boundary – the New York close or your local midnight instead of 00:00 UTC – gives different previous-day levels and different results. The study does not say which side was taken first, how far price went beyond the level or what a trade would have earned after fees and funding. Past frequencies are not a forecast, and nothing on this page is trading advice.
Study the levels bar by bar in replay
Edgetrail’s bar replay can draw the previous day’s high and low (PDH/PDL) on the chart, on the same UTC days as this study and only for completed days, together with the previous week’s high and low, the daily, weekly and monthly open and the Tokyo, London and New York sessions. Step forward one candle at a time with the future hidden and decide at the level, before the close tells you whether it was a sweep. Start with Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana on Bybit, Binance, OKX or Coinbase; the guide how to backtest liquidity sweeps turns the idea into rules you can test, and the crypto candle history shows how far back each market’s 1-minute candles go.
