What win rate do you need? It depends on your R
The breakeven win rate for every risk/reward ratio, with costs – and how much a win rate swings on a small sample.
Short answer
A good win rate is any win rate above your breakeven, and the breakeven depends only on how big your average winner is compared with your average loser: 1 ÷ (1 + R:R). At 1:1 you need more than 50%, at 1:2 more than 33.3%, at 1:3 more than 25% – plus a little extra for fees, slippage and funding. A 35% win rate can be excellent and a 65% win rate can lose money; judge it only together with the average R.
Breakeven win rate by risk/reward
| Average win (R:R) | Breakeven win rate | With 0.1R costs per trade | For +0.2R per trade (with costs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5R | 66.7% | 73.3% | 86.7% |
| 0.75R | 57.1% | 62.9% | 74.3% |
| 1R | 50.0% | 55.0% | 65.0% |
| 1.25R | 44.4% | 48.9% | 57.8% |
| 1.5R | 40.0% | 44.0% | 52.0% |
| 2R | 33.3% | 36.7% | 43.3% |
| 2.5R | 28.6% | 31.4% | 37.1% |
| 3R | 25.0% | 27.5% | 32.5% |
| 4R | 20.0% | 22.0% | 26.0% |
| 5R | 16.7% | 18.3% | 21.7% |
Losers at −1R. Breakeven = 1 ÷ (1 + b); with costs c per trade in R: (1 + c) ÷ (1 + b); for a target expectancy E: (1 + c + E) ÷ (1 + b). Computed, not measured.
Why there is no single good win rate
Trend-following and breakout systems often win 30 to 40% of the time with winners of 2R to 4R. Mean-reversion and scalping systems often win 55 to 70% with winners below 1R. Both can be profitable; both can fail. The risk/reward calculator gives the breakeven for any entry, stop and target, with fees. What decides is the distance between your actual win rate and the breakeven in the table – that distance, multiplied by (1 + R:R), is your expectancy: E = w × (1 + b) − 1. The expectancy calculator does it with your numbers.
Costs move the breakeven
Every trade pays fees on entry and exit, and on perpetuals possibly funding. If those costs are worth 0.1R per trade – easy to reach with a tight stop and taker fees – the breakeven at 1:1 rises from 50% to 55%, and at 1:2 from 33.3% to 36.7%. That is why Edgetrail’s journal calculates R after fees: the R you see is the one your breakeven has to beat. How much a win rate swings by chance
A system that truly wins 40% of the time shows anything from about 27% to 53% over 30 trades – enough to look like a 1:1 winner or a clear loser. These ranges come from a reproducible simulation (method in how many trades does a backtest need):
| True win rate | 30 Trades | 100 Trades | 300 Trades |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30% | 16.7% – 43.3% | 23.0% – 38.0% | 25.7% – 34.3% |
| 40% | 26.7% – 53.3% | 32.0% – 48.0% | 35.3% – 44.7% |
| 50% | 36.7% – 63.3% | 42.0% – 58.0% | 45.3% – 54.7% |
| 60% | 46.7% – 73.3% | 52.0% – 68.0% | 55.3% – 64.7% |
90% of simulated samples fell in these ranges (5th to 95th percentile, 20,000 runs, seed 20261022).
Win rate in Edgetrail
Edgetrail counts the win rate over fully closed trades in your account currency: winners ÷ all closed trades, where breakeven trades count in the total but not as winners. Partly closed trades enter only once the last exit is booked. The dashboard shows the win rate next to the profit factor; the analytics break it down by system, asset, direction, market condition and timeframe, and mark groups under 20 trades as a thin sample. Details are on the methodology page. Edgetrail costs $24 a month or $199 a year; the first 50 Founders pay $99 once, after that a Lifetime plan costs $249 once. The first 14 days are free without a credit card, and every payment comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 40% win rate good?
It is good if your average winner is clearly above 1.5R after costs: the breakeven at 1:1.5 is 40%. With 2R winners a 40% win rate earns about +0.2R per trade before costs.
What win rate do I need with a 1:2 risk/reward?
More than 33.3% to break even without costs, and about 36.7% if costs take 0.1R per trade. For +0.2R per trade with those costs you need 43.3%.
Do breakeven trades count in the win rate?
In Edgetrail they count in the number of trades but not as winners, so they lower the win rate slightly. That keeps the win rate consistent with expectancy, which also divides by all closed trades.
How many trades do I need to trust my win rate?
With 30 trades a true 40% can show anywhere from about 27% to 53%; with 300 trades the range narrows to about 35% to 45%.
