Funding fee calculator
What holding a perpetual futures position costs – or earns – in funding.
Short answer
Funding per settlement = position value × funding rate, where position value = size × mark price; when the rate is positive, longs pay shorts, and when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Example: a long of 0.5 BTC at a mark price of $60,000 is worth $30,000; at 0.01% every 8 hours it pays $3 per settlement and $27 over 72 hours (9 settlements). You only pay or receive funding if you hold the position at the settlement time.
The formula and who pays
Position value = size × mark price at the settlement time.
Funding per settlement = position value × funding rate.
Positive rate: longs pay, shorts receive. Negative rate: shorts pay, longs receive.
Over the holding time = funding per settlement × number of settlements you hold through.
Binance, Bybit and OKX describe the same formula in their help pages (sources below). Binance states that it charges no fee on funding: the payments go directly between traders holding opposite positions. The glossary defines funding rate, position value and gross vs net P&L, and a full long with fees and three funding times is worked through in crypto futures P&L with fees and funding.
How many settlements you hit
Funding is settled at fixed times, by default at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC for 8-hour contracts on Binance and OKX; other contracts settle every 4, 2 or 1 hours, and Binance can switch a contract to hourly funding when the rate hits its cap. On 4 November 2026, 1,053 of 1,470 crypto perpetuals on Bybit, Binance and OKX settled every 4 hours, not every 8 – check the interval of your contract. The calculator counts whole intervals in your holding time (holding hours ÷ interval, rounded down); depending on the clock time you open, you can hit one settlement more. Close before the settlement and you pay or receive nothing – but Binance notes that settlement can be off by about 15 seconds, and Bybit does not guarantee positions opened or closed within 5 seconds of the funding time.
What funding costs on $10,000

| +0.1% | −$10 | −$30 | −$210 | −$900 | 109.5% |
Long position worth $10,000, rate and mark price held constant (an assumption). Minus = you pay, plus = you receive; for a short every sign flips.

Funding in your trading journal
Funding is part of the real result of a perpetual trade. In Edgetrail, trades imported from Bybit (Closed P&L) and OKX (closed positions) already include funding in the realised P&L. The Binance and Hyperliquid imports do not, because those exchanges book funding separately – for those trades, results are before funding. Replay trades don’t apply funding. Before you hold a position for days, the position size calculator and this page together show what the stop and the carry cost.

Frequently asked questions
Who pays funding, longs or shorts?
When the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. The amount is position value × funding rate at each settlement.
How often is funding charged?
Every 8 hours by default on Binance and OKX, but many contracts settle every 4 hours or every hour. The interval is in each contract’s specification on the exchange.
Can I avoid paying funding?
Only by not holding the position at a settlement time. A position closed before the settlement pays and receives nothing; one held through it pays or receives the full amount.
Is funding a fee that the exchange keeps?
Binance says it charges no fee on funding and that funding payments go directly between traders with opposite positions. Trading fees for opening and closing are separate.
